Book Review 8
Name Of The Book : The Inscrutable Americans
Author : Anurag Mathur
Publisher : Rupa Publications India
Year : 2006
Category : Fiction
Review:
The novel describes one year spent on a small university campus in America by an Indian student Gopal. He comes from a small town, locally reputed to be 'the Paris of Madhya Pradesh'. His English is comically Indian, and his initial notions of America are absurdly inadequate and stereotyped. The theme of the novel is his discovery of America, and his own growth and maturing through his diverse adventures there.
I did not know anything about the book or the author before picking up this book so it was a complete surprise to me. The book starts with a letter written by Gopal to his younger brother in India. The humour was on point and I was keen to complete the book. The author is able to keep the reader engaged till the end. I liked the clever use of language for humour. The challenges that Gopal faces are portrayed accurately. The book is fast paced and we are taken through the conflicting emotions he experiences. Overall, a good read which will make you laugh out loud as well as connect with the thoughts of the protagonist.
Rating : 3.9/5
