Review :
'Bad Feminist' is a 2014 collection of essays by cultural critic, novelist and professor Roxane Gay. 'Bad Feminist' explores being a feminist while loving things that could seem at odd with feminist ideology.Gay's essays engage pop culture and her personal experiences, covering topics as diverse as the Sweet Valley High series, Django Unchained, and Gay's own upbringing as a Haitian American. The essays in the book address a wide variety of topics, both cultural and personal. The collection of essays is broken into five sections : Me; Gender & Sexuality; Race & Entertainment; Politics, Gender & Race and Back to Me.
The book covers a very wide range of topics in relation to feminism. She talks about women of colour, privilege, women friendships, women of reality television, unlikeability of (women) characters in books, rape culture, etc. Her take on other feminist books of history and literature was very interesting. One of my favourite chapters is 'Beyond The Measure Of Man' where she talks about women's fiction. Her observations about well known fairy tales was certainly thought provoking. She uses humour, sarcasm and a lot of anecdotes to put across her points to the reader. One of the problems I faced while reading this book was that she talked about a lot of movies and television shows which I was not familiar with, thus making it a little difficult for me. Her thoughts on reproductive freedom are mind blowing. I have so many quotes from this book which I loved. This book certainly made me think about a lot of issues. I urge everyone to pick up this book to broaden your views on a lot of subjects.
