Review :
'Milk And Honey' by Rupi Kaur is a collection of poetry about love, loss, trauma, abuse, healing and femininity. It is split into four chapters - The Hurting, The Loving, The Breaking and The Healing . There is a sketch along with each poem which is related to the theme of the poem.
I do not read poetry very often but I had read a few poems by Rupi Kaur on the internet and they were good so I picked up this book. The reviews about this book were mixed so I decided to read it to find out. The themes which the author has mentioned in the introduction (more aptly in the conclusion) were of interest to me but I was a little disappointed with the book. The poems were just loosely connected to the theme; it did not delve deeper into any of them. A better space utilization would have made the reading process easier. There is a lot of empty space throughout the book. Some of the sketches were exceptionally good while most of the others - not so great. The same applies to the poems - a few were great but most of the others would have been better off as Tumblr posts. They have emotions but the use of absolutely no punctuation is quite aggravating. The unnecessary use of line breaks also made me cringe. The fact that the name of the book and the author on the cover page, the description of the book and the author is also written in a similar way, whatever the reason maybe, certainly did not go well with me. A lot of the poems I felt were just sentences made to look fancy by using line breaks. After a while, the poems grew repetitive. They could have been better organized as I felt that they were deviating from their themes at times. It was a quick read and I was able to finish it in two hours.
Rating : 3.5/5
