Review :
Things were never the same for five ordinary individuals who were lost at crossroads and there was no way back. They had no other choice but to take a plunge into their deepest fears and leave the rest to destiny. The individuals were tested away from their comfort zones and it produced abstruse results: a PhD scholar fights to win a pizza-making contest and a tennis prodigy runs for his life on a war-torn, bloodied Island. Extreme circumstances and their consequences made these ordinary individuals extraordinary. Was the test imposed on them by someone? Or did they invite it on themselves? Blue Moon Day is that Once in a Blue Moon story which questions an individual's priorities, ridicules worldly routines and finally redefines happiness.
Initially, I had thought that this was going to be a self- help book which is a genre I do not prefer. But surprisingly, this book does not give us advice; rather, it leads the way through the story. There are five stories about five individuals who face an adverse situation and how they face them and emerge victoriously. The first story is about Abhinav, a PhD scholar who cannot find a job and is suffering from obesity. He meets Mr Pillai who asks him to win a pizza-making contest, which becomes a turning point in his life. The second story is about a couple Deepak and Priya. Due to various personal and professional problems, they both part ways and Depak becomes addicted to smoking and drinking. His friend Aju helps Deepak to solve the problems in an unexpected way and Priya and Deepak reconcile. In the third story, Vivi is a workaholic who is unable to balance his personal and professional life. While on a disastrous vacation with his family, he falls into a deep water body. This leads to the greatest adventure of his life where he does not know whether if he will come out alive. The fourth story is my favourite. Sankaran is forced to admit himself into an old age home due to his circumstances. But due to the lonely life at the old age home, he decides to suicide. He does not die and at the hospital, he meets a friend Anustup who helps him regain his lost hope. I loved the letters that they exchanged. The fifth story is about Prabha who hails from a poor economic background who with his sheer determination and hard work, becomes a well-known tennis player. He is unexpectedly diagnosed with a terminal illness which shatters all his hopes and dreams. But a trip in search of Dr Velan changes his life. The end of the book has a good twist. Overall, I really enjoyed the book. The language is simple and easy to understand. This is the debut book of the author and he has done a commendable job.
