Book Review 69
Name Of The Book : The Clothing Of Books
Author : Jhumpa Lahiri
Publisher : Penguin Random House India
Year : 2017
Category : Non Fiction
Review :
How do you clothe a book? In this deeply personal reflection, Pulitzer Prize – winning author Jhumpa Lahiri explores the art of the book jacket from the perspectives of both reader and writer. Probing the complex relationships between text and image, author and designer, and art and commerce, Lahiri delves into the role of the uniform; explains what book jackets and design have come to mean to her; and how, sometimes, “the covers become a part of me.”
This book was originally an essay written by the author in Italian. She delivered the same as the keynote speech, for the ninth edition of the Festival delgi Scrittori in Florence in 2010. It was later translated, edited and compiled into a book. I had really high expectations from this book but I was disappointed. The beginning was interesting, but as the book proceeds, the author deviates from the theme and the continuity is lost. There is no detail in the descriptions and it lacked a certain depth that is usually present in her writing. This would have been better off as an essay or a speech. It did not have enough content to be made into a book by itself. I bought this book because I loved the other books by the same author and also because it has a cute cover .If you are really keen on reading it, I would suggest that you read the e-book version.
