Book Review 11
Name Of The Book : The Vine Of Desire
Author : Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni

Year : 2003
Category : Fiction
Review :
This book is a sequel to the book 'Sister Of My Heart'. It tells the story of Anju and Sudha after Anju's miscarriage. Sudha and her daughter Dayita moving to the U.S. to live with Anju and her husband Sunil. The book follows the journey of each of these characters. There are new characters introduced throughout the book; old characters are revisited as well. Even though a lot of conflicts and misunderstandings come in between Anju and Sudha, they unite at the end of the book.
'Sister Of My Heart' was a book I simply loved and thus I was quite excited when I realised that it had a sequel. However, the book disappointed me. The first half of the book was pretty good but from the second half, I found it boring. The plot was unnecessarily stretched and more characters were added needlessly. The author has tried a different kind of narration - letters to and from the different characters, what I said, what I did not say, etc. which made it quite interesting. A few essays written by Anju were also incorporated which was a welcome change. However, sometimes the characters become senseless and over dramatic creating unwanted complications. What makes the book readable is Chitra Banerjee's ability to weave the tale with her eloquent use of language.
Rating : 3/5
