Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right? Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him - wherein he’ll have to woo her - he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself. The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not? Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.
Dimple is a second generation Indian living in America. She loves coding and her dream is to win the Insomnia Con 2017 at San Francisco and meet Jenny Lindt, a genius in her field. Her parents want to get her married to Rishi, an Indian-American like her who is the son of their acquaintance. Dimple and her parents have conflicting ideas about life and they are mostly in disagreement. She gets an opportunity to take part in the Insomnia Con 2017 and she is determined to achieve her goals. She believes that her dedication and perseverance will help her reach the zenith of success. Richi is sent there by his parents to meet Dimple but due to some miscommunication and misunderstanding, Dimple is initially hostile to Rishi. They are in the same team for the event and soon they are forced to reconcile in spite of their differences. They become good friends and have an exciting journey. Rishi’s brother Ashish, who is the polar opposite also plays an important role in this book. Dimple helps Rishi overcome his fears and discover his passion. The story is a cliché but the romance between the leads is cute. Dimple is rebellious but her character is the typical tomboy geek. Rishi is also the Prince Charming and mister perfect. These characters could have been made more unconventional. The book portrays the conflicts of the younger generation who are torn between Indian traditions and culture and their American values. I learnt a lot about comics from this book which I really enjoyed. The book also addresses parental pressures and how parents force their children to pursue what they think is right rather than what their child is passionate about. This can have drastic consequences on the mental and emotional well-being on the children. In the second half of the book, I felt like the incidents were dramatized unnecessarily and it would have been better if they were more subtle. This is an adorable love story which will keep you entertained.
