Book Review 9
Name Of The Book : Why We Love The Way We Do
Author : Preeti Shenoy
Publisher : Westland Lts
Year : 2015
Category : Non-Fiction
Review:
This book is a collection of essays on relationships based on Preeti Shenoy's popular columns in a national daily, in which the novelist discusses some of those issues and questions that people in relationships, or those hoping to be in one, face. The topics range from those particular to our modern, technology-filled world - how to move from an online relationship to a real-life one, how to find and keep love online, whether casual sex is worth the effort - to those immortal issues such as how men and women communicate differently, how to deal with a broken heart and how jealousy ruins a relationship. When it comes to relationships, these are the questions that most of us ponder. No matter how young or old we are, we are all looking for ways to make our relationships better. The best way is to understand what makes us behave the way we do.
This is the first non fiction book I read in 2018. Usually, when newspaper articles by an author are compiled, there is lack of continuity; but this book has been divided into seven sections and the arrangement of the articles have created a link between them. However, the sections can be read in any order. The tone which the author uses is not patronising as is the case with many such articles by certain writers. Thus we are more open to what Preeti Shenoy is trying to convey. Each section starts with a few quotes by eminent personalities which were very relevant. She has included many anecdotes, most of which I could relate to. We are aware of all that the author talks about in this book, but we may never have given it much thought. I found some of the content a little hackneyed but not at all boring. The author not only poses questions and problems to the reader, but attempts to provide practical solutions too. I recommend this book to readers of all ages for better understanding of relationships.
